Jefferson County International Airport to go green with solar power for runway lights, navigational beacon

The Port of Port Townsend and a group of local investors have implemented a Community Solar Project that will hopefully be the first of many. Read all about it in this Peninsula Daily News article.

Sustainability - A topic being considered by our Chamber of Commerce

Local 20/20 was pleased to host the November 21 meeting of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber allowed us to stray from their traditional meeting format so that we could host several tables for a variety of engaging conversations. You can read the full report at Sustainable Together.
The following short reports were given as the meeting came to a close:

• Local Food Resiliency: Put on a Reskilling Fair to demonstrate and promote teaching and sharing of “old fashioned” skills like food preservation, beekeeping, leatherworking, etc.

• Transportation: Would like to see (1) a ferry connection from Port Townsend to Bainbridge Island, (2) an ORCA-style regional transportation card system for all buses and ferries, and (3) free Jefferson Transit service from the Port Townsend Park & Ride to downtown and uptown (a fare is currently charged, but this route has been free in the past).

• Local Investing: Need to provide additional education to our community about investment modalities—what is available, how do they work?

• Emergency Preparedness: Every business needs to conduct a disaster preparedness assessment and put a plan in place so that in an emergency, we can rely on ourselves, not on government.

• Water: Align the farmer and their land and the available water with the optimal crops.

• Energy: Focus on residential energy efficiency upgrades.

• Waste Reduction: Work to reduce paper and plastic waste in our community.

• Healthcare: Simply a question… How can we have a for-profit entity standing between people who need healthcare and healthcare providers?

Awards:
Rick Oltman of Cape Cleare Fishery Receives the Transportation Lab's first award for Connecting the Dots

The Transportation Lab (a Local 20/20 action group) has given its first award to Rick Oltman, owner of Cape Cleare Fishery. In giving the Connecting the Dots award, the T Lab recognizes that Rick not only fishes sustainably, but sees the connection with sustainable transportation, good health, food resiliency, a healthy economy, and the many other aspects of Local 20/20 that make up our diverse action groups. Rick leaves a small footprint by bicycling his fish (the best tasting and best nutrition anywhere) to fine restaurants, stores, and the Farmers Market. The award was given after Rick made a superb salmon lunch for 60 visiting experts during the Smart Growth in Small Towns Tour on February 3rd. The video was shot by Dan Burden, leader of the tour and Director of the Walkable and Livable Communities Institute, based in Port Townsend.

Join Us!

Local 20/20 brings together individuals and organizations in our community interested in sustainability and who see the remedy for the dangers of globalization and our dependence on cheap oil in the re-localization of our economies. Local 20/20 encourages our community to conserve our local resources (water and land, both wild and cultivated), develop local energy sources, re-orient our activities in response to more limited transportation options, and learn how to produce the things we've grown accustomed to buying from somewhere else here in our own town.

Local 20/20 invites the community to join the conversation about local sustainability and economic re-localization.  General meetings are held each month.  View our event calendar for meeting times and locations. General meetings and Council meetings are open to all North Olympic Peninsula community members. Also consider participating in the meetings and projects of the Action Groups who meet separately to discuss specific areas of action.
