spacer Who We Are

photo Local 20/20 is an unusual name for our organization, but so is our work. We are a new citizen-based organization dedicated to exploring opportunities in our local community to promote economic self-reliance, environmental stewardship, and community well-being.  The name refers to 20/20 vision… such as planning for the quality of life in our community in 2020.... as well as a variety of other individual meanings.

Local 20/20 has formed Action Groups around key areas:
Economic Localization, Education & Community Outreach, Emergency Preparedness, Energy, Food and Farms, Giving Back, Health and Wellness, Shelter, Transportation, Waste and Recycling, and Water. We hope to have activities in and members from throughout Jefferson County as well as Clallam and the broader bioregion.

Local 20/20 began organizing in January of 2006. Many old time residents as well as newcomers came to hear a talk at the Port Townsend Community Center by Brian Weller of the WELL project (www.willitseconomiclocalization.org) in Willits, California. He talked about how neighbors were working together to ensure that their community was ready for disasters from oil shortages to earthquakes. He shared how they looked at the assets in the community and found that there was real community wealth that they had overlooked in the past but that by working together they could get some things done that in the past were thought impossible.

Those attending the WELL presentation got real excited and thought how much the quality of life mattered to this community and they could see some parallels with the challenges facing our small, rural community. Local 20/20 began to meet regularly to keep our discussion and work together ongoing and eventually decided our mission is “Working together to ensure a thriving local culture balancing economy, ecology and community.”

Local 2020 has come together as a self-organizing "adhocracy".  It’s not part of any official government effort, doesn’t have an office or employees. It’s about the citizens coming together when something is important and needs to get done. While the structure and format of this organization will likely change as it grows, the mission and its grassroots orientation will remain intact.

One way to ensure that things get done is to focus on specific local priorities, hence the formation of the Local 20/20 Action Groups. Working independently,
yet in synergistic fashion, the twelve Action Groups are currently identifying and mapping the assets that already exist in the community. The purpose of this common project is multifold:

  • To Create a unique directory of resources and statistics about our community that can be maintained over time and used to measure the group’s progress
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen existing resources and discover gaps that future projects can fill.
Fueled by our members’ passion, we recognize that we share a vision that our efforts need to focus on positive action that is sustainable and fair to everyone.
Citizens involved in Local 20/20 are moving forward on a variety of projects. You can read all about their plans and projects by clicking on the various Action Groups listed in the left pane.
