Dundee Hill Community Garden
The Dundee Hill Community Garden was launched in November of 2007, with 2010 being our third growing season. There are currently fourteen individuals, couples, or families as members of this gardening effort, feeding at least 27 people from a 6000 sq. ft. garden space. Our youngest member is less than 2, and our oldest member (honorary) is 80. Membership is reassessed every fall, but the garden is intended for people who live in the Dundee Hill neighborhood. We garden collectively, not P-Patch style, and seem to thrive on that model. Our garden has a wide variety of annuals and perennial fruits and vegetables, with our menu of crops altering a bit from year to year. Luckily, we each have different inclinations of what to focus on in the garden effort - some like to handle greens, some deal with infrastructure, some love to weed, others have a passion for managing the berry patch. We added a PVC and UV protected plastic hoop house our first summer, and it produces amazing amounts of basil, tomatoes, eggplants, cukes, and other heat loving crops. This year, we are experimenting with planting more crops for storage purposes, garlic, potatoes, winter squash, and onions, to name a few. We are also putting some effort into improving our drip irrigation system since watering a 6,000 sq. ft. space can otherwise be time consuming! All in all, we each work to our abilities, things tend to get done, and we create a lot of really tasty, healthy food. Growing food together, collectively, is much less labor intensive than growing it alone! And, without doubt, a lot more fun! |
