Pastor Jake at the New Song Worship Center envisioned the creation of a garden to be tended by church and community alike. In February 2009, Jake, several church members and a few neighborhood families met to conceptualize this garden. Within two months, we cleared 6000 square feet of quack grass and glacial rock, rototilled, fenced, amended the soil, planted border sun flowers, and built and planted raised beds.

Each member has a p-patch, each unique in its design and plantings. We additionally have community plots for berries, greens, herbs, potatoes, corn and more. The p-patch structure has turned out to be a collaborative experience, with members sharing seeds, ideas, watering, and produce. A wobbly stretch of chain link is the garden entrance for now, but a design for an artistic handcrafted gate is in the works. Irrigation and composting systems are in various stages of development.

Pastor Jake says, “The garden reflects one of our core beliefs – ‘life is best lived when lived deeply with people who deeply love and cherish one another’ – what better place to grow new friends than in a garden?”
