Beyond Waste
- In partnership with Jefferson County Public Works and the Port of Port Townsend, staged a successful electronic waste collection event to offer easy recycling of electronics and provide public education on the environmental risk of improper disposal
- In partnership with the Department of Ecology, held a public meeting on waste stream education
- Visited Department of Ecology headquarters in Lacey, Washington
- Educated children and adults with our Super Sorter Challenge at the EDED Green Living Expo and County Fair
Climate Action
- In partnership with local schools, helped to promote Climate Dialogue Day
- In partnership with Seattle's Climate Dialogues, established a number of local Climate Change discussion groups
- Partnered with Climate Protection Campaign which ultimately led to a joint city/county resolution to establish carbon emissions measures and reduction plans
- Launched Jefferson Climate Action Now – www.JeffersonCAN.org
Economic Localization
- In partnership with The Leader, WSU, Main Street and the Food Coop; contributed to the LOCAL, a coupon book designed to promote businesses that are owned and operated by locals
- Instigated LION - the Local Investment Opportunity Network, providing an opportunity for local investors to keep investment dollars in the community
- Established the North Olympic Exchange (NOE), a local currency trading system that helps to build and support a sustainable community. The NOE connects unused resources with unmet needs as it puts a human face on our economical transactions, supports local buying, taps into people’s skills and creativity, and encourages the creation of local goods and services.
Emergency Preparedness
- Partnering with Jefferson County Dept of Emergency Management (DEM) to motivate and educate over 100 neighborhoods to self-organize for EP purposes
- Partnered with Heather Taracka in promoting Individual/Family Emergency Preparedness classes
- Partnered with the Food Co-op and the DEM to stage a special pricing sale in Sept '08 on foods and supplies for emergency supply purposes.
Energy
- Presented numerous energy forums on renewable energy, conservation and weatherization to motivate the community toward responsible energy management
- Partnered with Jefferson Energy Center to donate "1,000 Lights To Make A Point" at Food Coop; saving 40 tons of CO2 emissions per year for Jefferson County
- Created Citizens for Local Power which collected over 2,100 voter signatures to place Proposition #1 on the November 2008 ballot. This proposition would authorize Jefferson PUD #1 to form an electric utility
- Citizens for Local Power led the successful campaign to authorize a public electric utility district in the State of Washington for the first time 40 years
Food Resiliency
- Hosted four public potluck conversations in '07-'08 at the Quimper Grange, to learn about the salient issues associated with our local food supply access
- Instigated the proliferation of community gardens around Jefferson County, many neighborhood-based, through multiple community presentations and presence at the Farmers Market and Jefferson County Fair
- Partnered with the Food Co-op to expand on food storage skills by conducting a pressure canning workshop
- Partnered with Quimper Fruit Tree Harvest gleaning group, participated in delivering over 5000 pounds of figs, apples, plums, and pears to the local food banks, schools, and the senior housing and nutrition program
- Partnered with the County Solid Waste Dept, the Master Gardeners, and WSU to promote two free composting workshops taught by a WSU Master Gardener in '08
- Host FAQs and Garden Profiles on our website to assist new community gardens with best practices and protocols
- Provide a matchmaking service, linking land owners with those wanting a place for a community garden
Giving Back
- Helped create SCALLOPS, Sustainable Communities ALL Over Puget Sound, a network of neighborhood groups, now totaling about 60, collaborating on sustainability issues
Health and Wellness
- Partnered with Jefferson County Health Dept. in 2006 to sponsor a program on the Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) form
- Partnered with the Rose Theatre to host a community dialogue after the showing of SICKO
- Gathered signatures on a petition for a single payer health care system
- Sponsored a presentation and community conversation on the impact of wood smoke on our air quality and health
- With Jefferson County Health department, sponsored a program on Pandemics including what actions the County will take and what individuals should do to minimize their health impact during a Pandemic
- Participated on a roundtable with health professionals and volunteer organizations to discuss health topics and determine where linkages need to be created or strengthened to provide better coordination of services
Shelter
- Workshops held in 2007: Intro to Built Green certification, Energy efficiency and rebates, Green professionals, Materials and suppliers, Green for REALTORS® and homeowners, and green landscape, design, energy and construction
Transportation
- Created a carbon neutral EDED event through efforts to encourage car-pooling, biking, public transit and walking to the Earth Day event, with carbon offsets paid to cover the balance
- Set up links to local transportation options on the Jefferson CAN website; www.JeffersonCAN.org
- Partnered with the City and County to sponsor a Smart Trips event January 2009
Watershed
- Published water conservation tips in Mayor’s column in August 2006 water/sewer bills mailed to all PT residents
- The Water, Transportation, Giving Back, and Food Resiliency Action Groups teamed up with two CA-based videographers who were in Port Townsend in 2006 to film Peak Moment shows highlighting sustainable lifestyle shifts ultimately destined to be seen on the web (peakmoment.tv, L2020.org)in half hour video segments
- In September 2006, Water Action Group’s Sally Lovell worked in concert with the Dept. of Environmental Health on simple public domain composting toilet technology for water conservation and emergency toilet options
- Spearheaded, with WSU as a partner, a fall 2008 Friday public information forum on our watershed issues and realities. The Watershed presentation was filmed and has provided a broader education into the community through multiple airings on PTTV
- Hosted a post-movie petition drive in conjunction with the showing of "FLOW" at the Rose Theatre
